Many airlines began actively hiring during the latter half of 2012, when several airlines announced plans for future growth due to increased profits, route expansion, fleet acquisitions and retirements. Delta Airlines, which merged with Northwest Airlines, has begun a major hiring push. The airline recently announced that it needed to fill 400 flight attendant positions. To date, the airline has received over 22,000 applications for these positions. Similarly, when American Airlines posted 1500 flight attendant vacancies on the company website, they received over 20,000 applications. US Airways, another airline that has not hired in quite some time also has announced plans to hire up to 420 new flight attendants. The airline has already begun accepting online applications in anticipation of the hiring surge. Two other major airlines that have been in a hiring mode is United Airlines, which has merged with Continental Airlines, and Alaska Airlines.
Many other airlines resumed hiring in 2012 and predict a greater need for new flight attendants in the coming year. Of the 50 airlines that are monitored by AirlineCareer.com, 36 are now actively hiring or are accepting applications in anticipation of future hiring.
According to Joseph Belotti, President of AirlineCareer.com, "We have been contacted by many airlines about their aggressive hiring plans for the coming year. Some of those airlines include Air Canada, Virgin America, Mesa, Air Wisconsin, Southwest, Delta, JetBlue, United, US Airways and WestJet. We are also monitoring increased hiring activity at many of the international and multi-national carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Singapore, Ryanair, Gulf Air, and Qantas UK. Although many airlines are hiring, competition is intense and we advise all applicants to prepare themselves thoroughly for the interview process before applying to the airlines. Most airlines will require unsuccessful applicants to wait six to twelve months before reapplying."
